The comment in How is wrong IMHO. The Fly-out/Retractable menus are good for navigation, where the user sees the menu briefly and chooses one action/link. Whereas Details-on-demand are used when the user wants to read the larger info thoroughly or use it for numerous actions.
The latter issue can be elaborated in the Why section.

This pattern is used when there is a lot of information. Instead of presenting the whole information and confusing the user, you are actually giving the user an option of selecting what he wants and then presenting information.
